| What would be the way to go? I've tried with a cast net, and get one or two, but the rest run for the safety of the marina docks. What would be a good set up to catch them on rod and reel?

cricket under a cork with a bream hook. A great way to get them, but I don't know if they sell crickets here. Needs to be the brown cricket.
we had Armstrong Cricket in louisiana and almost every local store would sell them. if you can find one, then you have found a bunch of them this time of year. _________________ Joe Simpson

| chum the water with some crumbled up bread and then they will hit just about anything. Use some worms on tiny hooks. If you get the earthworms at Wal-mart and pinch off about a half inch at a time and they will go crazy.

Throw a few worms in the water before you throw the net.

Marinas are good.
A lot of the local community lakes are better than Lavon (IMHO). _________________ You think THAT'S hard, try naming two cities in New Hampshire!

Ended up using the crumbled bread/worm on a hook method and caught quite a few. Thanks for the tips!

Are you able to catch perch from the bank this time of year? I always thought they would be deeper and not shallow until spring. I've caught some nice blues off of perch. _________________ Grapevine blue cat record holder 43.41 lbs.

They sell live crickets at pet stores, so folks can feed their lizards, turtles, & frogs..Have never tried crickets though...
Bread & dough works good, but they are good little baitstealers and will get you more than you get them.
Worms work great and are harder for them to steal...

Growing up as a kid in the country I used to spend all day at the tanks behind my house catching LARGE GOGGLE EYE perch... had a few go close to a pound. The only thing I ever used was freshly caught grass hoppers....but being in the city and cold those aren't really avaliable lol
I turned it into quite an art....just a small wire hook tied straight to the line....used either a cane pole or a spinning rod and reel that I would let line out and use like a fly rod. The grass hoppers will float on the surface for a little while until the perch hit...and if you don't kill them when you hook them they will kick around and swim on the surface, makes for great top water action. This also would draw in the cats after a little while....nothing like catching a 5# channel on an ultra lite with 4# test!!!
I called my technique "Hopper Pop'n"...eventually started going down to the Brazos after a rain when it was flowing and using the same technique on outside bends in the river and next to log jams....tons of fun...never knew what you were gonna catch.
