I have a couple of spinning reels and they both do the same darn thing so it has to be me right?

When I open the bale, my line jumps of the reel like a freckin slinky toy, that's before I even have a chance to attempt to pitch my bait.

Second, it will a portion will loop out and I will have to let out 70% of my line to get to it and reel it correctly...

Last but most importantly, my husband says it spiderwires, but after a few passes of trolling w/swimbaits, my line is twisted so bad that it make 3in loops in my line....

What do you guys think I'm doing wrong, what is the best line for trolling?

Thanks for yer help

Make sure that when you put the line on the reel that it is laying flat so that it goes onto the reel as its laying on the spool. Stop after a little winding and see if there is twist in the line. If there is flip the spool on the ground over.

Here is a decent article.

For trolling you may want to consider a swivel and a leader to prevent the swim bait from twisting your line. Make sure your bait isnt spinning while you are trolling too.

One suggestion is that you might actually have too much line on the reel. Leave a little room at the end do not line it completely. At least 1/8th inch to the base of the spool should be open.

Another thing you might want to do is use a barrel swivel and a leader with your bait. It will reduce line twist greatly. Vertical jigging is the only time I do not use a swivel and a leader, any other method, IMHO needs one.

Hope this helps.

Also if you do all the above and it still is looping off, be sure to keep tension on the line coming out of the bail. Hold the line tight with one hand while opening the bail with the other. If you leave any slack inbetween the rod and reel its certain doom if you have line springing off the reel.

It could also be the type of line that you are using. Copolymer lines and high abrasion resistant monofilaments have hard exteriors which make the line stiff. Hence it jumps off the spool when ya lifts the bail.

Softer lines like Berkley XL or something similar usually work better on spinning reels. but are less abrasion resistant. Trade-offs in whatever ya do.

If ya filled the spool correctly and are using a swivel then ya gots a tuff line. Try taking some line off and see if'n it helps. Could also be the pound test of your line. Verify the line weight is recommended for the reel you have. Maybe you line is over-rated for the reel.

Thanks guys, I will try those suggestions...they make a lot of sense.

I was also told to try Flourocarbon,,so we're trying that too

I tried that Reel Magic, didn't work for my lines but after a couple of weeks, my needle nose are working great.....

I have been using "Fire Line" for about seven years on my spinning reels and have had great luck with it, it has a very small diameter and doesn't have a problem twisting but is expensive so I strip about 200 feet of line off the reel and tie the Fire Line to it and only fill as much of the spool as I took off.

I was having this same problem, using flourocarbon and when I discussed it with the guy at Bass Pro, he told me that flourocarbon was the problem. Seems flouro has more "memory", I changed to mono and the problem went away. Just my 2 cents...

It may just be hand placement:

Before lifting the bail, grab the line with your finger. Look at it. The line must form a 90 degree angle at your forefinger. If the angle formed is less than 90 degrees you are holding your hand to high above the reel. On a small spinning reel, you might have to "fork" the reel handle between your middle and ring finger. If the reel is tiny, you may have to fork it between your forefinger & middle finger. On a large reel, you can place your hand directly above the handle and still maintain a 90 degree angle (on the line with your forefinger) when lifting the bail. If you are grasping the rods foregrip before corralling the line with your forefinger, with any size spinning reel, you will not be able to maintain a 90 degree angle and will have issues.

Most folks I see having issues are holding their hand to high, and can not maintain a 90 degree angle, which will force the line to de-spool. Sometimes the simplest things are often overlooked.. Don't know if this is your issue, but perhaps it will help someone. Some of the issues stated in previous replies may also cause problems.

IMHO this is what I think one or several of your problems are. Incorrect spooling when your putting your line on while putting new line on stop and see if your getting twist, if so flip the spool end for end. Putting too much line on, leave an 8th of an inch. Using line that has memory, look for a limper line. If your going to troll use a barrel swivel and leader. To get line twist out troll without anything on the end of your line for 10 minutes or so then reel it in. this will greatly correct it without having to spool new line on. Spinning reels are notorious for this problem you'll never get it cured completely but if you correct the above it will help alot. Most of what I said others have mentioned.

I open the baler with my finger holding the line, now I can't guarantee that I'm at 90 degrees but after I cast, I can look down and my line is falling off the reel and onto the deck.....

I think my line is twisting due to trolling without the barrel swivel + lead, but I forgot to check that application last trip

I had tried the swivel but never thought to put a lead on it, pretty dumb eh??

The flouro did some minor twisting but me and my husband used the exact same set up same rod/reel combo, same bait different line.
He was usinf Stren original, I had the flouro. I was catching 3 to his one.
At one point he wasn't catching anything and my arms were sore from reeling them in....although we were using the same bait, he thought there was a difference so we switched swimbaits and got the same results.

My husband wants flouro on his line, but refuses the swivel, so I will have to rig up mine with the barrel, however, my line has small amount of twisting due to trolling.
So to get the line to untwist, I need to troll with nothing on the line for ten minutes, my guess is to do that I have to put the line out and let it slag behind the boat ??
