They're always there...been my experience that sometimes they are closer to the ramp early, late, and when it's dark...a little further out from the ramp mid day. Threw 4-5 times about 40 yards out from the Highland ramp yesterday around 3pm and must have had 150 shad or so. Got about 30-40 each throw in 8 ft.

Hi Cheap,
I'm no expert with the cast net. I've owned one for a few years but would only toss it when I saw the shad were right on the bank and suicidal, cause I never practiced throwing and my throws were "marginal" at best. . Decided my lazy butt needed to do this, so one weekend when I could not fish, I watched a few different videos online and went out in the backyard and hammered out my "issues" tossing the net.

That being said, I' ve always had best luck (even when I could not throw well) when it just becomes light enough to see in the AM. that's about 5:30AM at present.

I did ok at East Fork/Trinity Trail at sunset/PM recently a few times. But last Fri I got there around 6PM, too early in my estimation, as the sun was still fairly high (and hot) and I had to work my tail off to catch them. They were a little farther out (and I have no boat) so I had to wade out a bit, hold the net high (and awkward), and toss, which is harder to do. Many throws yielded zilch, so i just had to make a lot of throws..

Best to you out there cheaper....
