Thanks MikeB. You have a pretty good point there. Only problem is that I use spincasters, spinning reels, and now want to try the baitcasters. I am to the point where sometimes I pick up a rod and just stare at it blankly trying to remember how to work it.

cheapersleeper, canting the reel such that the handle is on top is an ergonomic thing. It don't matter much catfishing, but if you chunk and wind all day keeping your thumb on top, your wrist will hurt (can hurt). Turning the reel with the handle on top will releive some of the stress on your wrist ie, it won't hurt as much
(you don't cant the reel a few degrees, go the full 90 degrees)

good luck

With all of the spinning reels that I have, all of the cranks are on the left. Just never felt comfortable reeling with the right hand with a spinning reel. Can't explain why, but the bait casters are all Right hand reel and all of the spinning reels are Left hand reels. Guess am just amphibious!!!

(I know it is really ambidextrous)

(I know it is really ambidextrous)[/quote] I use LH baitcasters now, since I used spinners for so long before, it only feels natural to me to keep using my left hand to crank um...But after a while with bait casters,I hate spinning reels now.

I am like you Ronnie. I hate reeling with my right hand.

I bought a baitcaster for bass/crappie that is left handed...... but with the proanglers I just persevere.

oh the compromises we have to make in life icon_lol.gif

Yeah, for LH retrieve, there is a very limited supply ... Maybe after Tex & LucasEd sell a few million of theirs , they'll expand & offer a LH version

I am right handed but have changed the handles on all my cheapo spincasters so that I can crank left handed. I would prefer a baitcaster with a left hand crank but am resigned to not getting one. The tiny bit that I have used a spinning reel spolied me.

The other option is to learn to reel backwards with your left hand icon_cry.gif icon_cry.gif

I like the baitcasters mainly because clickers are fun.

Yeah, not too many spinners have a bait clicker,& the ones that do will let the handle turn backwards when they're runnin. icon_confused.gif

Thanks all. Got one little refurb Abu 6000 per BigBrad's advice and an Eagle Claw rod per DavidP's advice. Now I will try to figure out how to use them.

Used them today and was conservative with my thumb. No problems. I had a few times where I ended up with maybe three feet of loose windings that I got out in a minute or two but no birdnests. I really like that reel.

Thanks all.

I get a little backlash with my 209's and Jigmasters... not so much with the Squidders... My theory is if you can pull the back lash out in a minute or less, it really never happened. If backlash interferes with your fishing, that's a problem...
