I was cruising around looking for some brush piles and I get confused with what I am seeing on my finder. I was cruising through an area where I know there are some brushpiles. If I have my finder anywhere above about 70% I see alot of solid black splotches on the screen at all depths. It doesn't look anything like fish, unless there are jellyfish in Lavon now.

So I got over what I was pretty sure was a brushpile and I marked it on my GPS. I then made passes over it while adjusting the sensitivity. When I backed it down to a point where the blotches on the screen went away, I only see one blotch about 5 feet off the bottom. I can only imagine that this is the top of a brush pile.

The problem is that I really have no confidence that I am actually seeing a brushpile. I guess in retrospect I should have just dropped a marker and tried to see if I could feel the brush with a hookless slab. But my main question is why am I seeing these blotches. I really don't think they are electrical interference as they go away when I get some speed. I've watched Ernest's dvd and seen others post real world pictures of brush piles. Their screens don't seem to have all the crud in the water that I am seeing.

BTW, this is a relatively new Eagle 320

I run it around 72% sometimes up to 80% and down to 68%. The best thing I think is to post some screen shots. A blotch in someones mind might be a big spot or a tiny spec. A picture will be worth a thousands blotches icon_smile.gif

I have tried it with both the auto sensitivity and manually changing it. I will try getting some pictures the next time out. As far as the size of the blotches they are relatively dark and about 1/8th to 1/4" big.

I got the same one after many recommendations on here. I have the same problem you do, exactly like you are describing. I pretty much just use it for the depth now.

I don't think it's the machine.. I just think it is a matter of not setting it to match the vessel. I don't know./

I run my sens. on my LMS 320 at 90-95%. My eagle 480 about 80%. That will be different on each set up. Auto works but I like it higher than Auto.

The best way to understand what you are seeing is to run over something you know. IE, your own B'p...

The other is to mark it and go back and drop a jig down and see if you hang up.
Forget the gps until you know for sure it is brush.
There are areas where Shad are so thick they just black out the screen. I run into that. The color units will help.

The harder objects will look like the bottom. The softer objects(fish) will be darker.

Once I get my new boat, I'm wanting to make a video on reading/understanding your electronics. I run Lowrance so Eagle will be the same.

We are hoping to have some on the water seminars along with seminars at a pavilion on Lavon in November. If so, you might want to come out and get some pointers....

Definately would want to come to one of those seminars. I was thinking that they might be shad but I seem to see them everywhere.

I'm wondering if messing with the greyline would help? It seems that all the blotches on my screen are dark. Maybe greyline would help differentiate a ball of shad from structure.

If you have time, go by Bass Pro, Garland, and talk to Chuck in marine electronics. He seems to really know these units and should be able to shed some light on your problem.

I certainly would like to learn more about setting and reading my fish finder. I have been messing around with it more often these days but could really use some tips and poiters!
