This will be my first time to fish then winter months. Is there anything I should watch out for as it pertains to my boat and fishing reels? For example, should I warm the engine up before I go full throttle or just treat it like its summer. Any extra maintenance needed?

Only thing I can think of, as it pertains to your motor, is to make sure you drain it of water really good after each use. Especially if it's gonna freeze over night.
Lots of gloves in the boat. I carry at least 3 pairs, if not more. Gotta keep the hands dry and warm. Extra set of clothes and jacket in the truck.
Anything else?
Come on winter time.

Don't think as we get in to winter that it's too cold to fish...it just gets those big blues active. Take extra time and precautions when it gets really cold to avoid accidents as hypothermia can set in much quicker than most realize, but if you just watch what you're doing and double check everything you'll do fine. If you get on a big fish in winter chances are there are more than one around in that area. Like Dave said...good gloves, a tobaggon or good head protection, and over dress in layers because you can always shed a few if you get too warm. Oh yeah, a waterproof/wind resistant suit helps tremendously!

I would suggest a dry box, like one of those orange ammo types & keep a set of sweats & a hoodie in there & maybe a emergency rain poncho & anything else that might help. I always try & idle my boat a little longer in the winter while it's still on the trailer so if there is a problem I'm not just floating around. If you fish the birds with a trolling motor make sure your outboard is trimmed up cause if you are moving fast with the trolling motor & the outboard hit a stump you will continue to go forward in the water  Be safe out there & take someone with you are have someone fishing near you.

good question about the boat and motor. I need to read up on the stuff myself as i have never had to worry about owning one and taking care of it, but i know that we never did anything other than drain the water out of the motor, which we do after every trip as habit.
i suggest wearing a rain suit when the boat is moving so that you don't get wet at all. You are gonna learn real quick why folks pay good money for a good rain suit....i like winter fishing, but there are those morning where you question your sanity - but one good fish and you remember.  Wear too much clothing and just take some off as the day goes on.
my favorite days are when it is really cold in the morning and by the time i am getting off the lake, i may be in a long sleeve shirt and that is it.

These are my favorite days, this pick was from one of those "Joe" days where we caught over 20 fisf over 20lbs with 3 ovewr 40, this was the 1st week in March last year, no wind short sleeves, 2 foot of water & big fish moving water everywhere. Just love it when you can see those wakes everywhere in 50 degree water temps & know they are cats. It will send chills down your spine, I can't wait for winter.

That day I couldn't even keep 3 rods out, it was incredible. Okay lets see some winter cats to get everybody drooling & get away from politics
Here are a couple from Feb this year, who says you have to have wind. I love it out there in Jan & Feb with no wind, those big cats will keep you warm & actually make you sweat cause we usually have on long johns.

Here's another one of mine from that same day in March from the back of the boat. This was Kevin from our park & he could only fish 1 pole cause the bite was nonstop big fish.
