Red-eared sunfish are one of the largest of the sunfish. I have caught a lot of them over 10 inches long. In East Texas they call them shell crackers because they like to eat aquatic snails. Also, did you catch them in public waters?

We use to catch Red ears in the three lb range in Florida at Merritt's Mill Pond, my brother still lives about 25 miles away, the minimum limit now is 14":

MERRITT'S MILL POND: This is a unique 202-acre spring-fed impoundment with crystal clear waters near the city limits of Marianna. The lake is accessible off US 90 in Marianna by taking SR 71 north 1.1 miles to SR 164 for 1.8 miles and then south on Hunter Fish Camp Rd. to the ramp. Merritt's Mill Pond is renowned for its trophy redear (shellcracker) fishing. The pond currently holds the State record for redear at 4.86 pounds and until recently held the world record fish. Fishing far from your boat, on cloudy or rainy days or when there is a ripple on the water may produce the best results when fishing in this clear water pond. Due to an extended drawdown in 1994-1996 for dam repairs, bluegill and redear populations suffered, however, largemouth bass populations capitalized on the abundance of food in the pond.
SPECIAL REGULATION: All redear sunfish (shellcracker) less than 14 inches in total length must be released immediately.
Contact - Arrowhead Campground; 4820 U.S. Highway 90 East, Marianna, FL 32446 (850) 482-5583

BTW, the fish pictured looks more like a goggle eye (rock bass) than a red ear to me mainly caus how dark he is & slender.

We caught a couple bass on a green scum frog, one on a purple worm with a red tail, but then we switched to small spinner baits, kind of like road runners but an off brand, and caught something every 2nd or 3rd cast. Both bass and bluegill/redear/warmouth really liked it. Had to leave the lake around 815 to go to church. Most fish were caught up in the northwest area of the lake where it is really thick. Good ole minn kota just loves those lily pads.

380 to Farmersville, Turn right underneath bridge, left at stop sign, go down street to stop sign, turn left, go about 2 miles southlake is on the left, no swimming, no motors over 15hp, hard to fish without a boat.

There is a big park there and the whole lake is owned by the city of Farmersville so yes it is a public lake.

At one time many, many years ago (maybe 1984-1987, sometime in that era) there were some lily pads one spring in the creek leading into tickey creek. I remember using a bobber and minnow and it was so cool watching that bobber disappear under the lily pads when a crappie would hit it. I have gone back every year and it has never been the same as it was that time. I had never fished there before then so I don't know how the previous years were. Lily pads are cool.
