I have been eyeballing these reels since I saw them at Bass Pro the other day. They have a nice smooth retrieve, and a nice loud clicker. They were also stamped as made in Sweden, plus I kind of like the unusual color. At about $100 a pop, I could live with a few "Cadillac" reels in my inventory. Was wondering if anyone had some of these in their possession and how they like them?

I am going to tell you my experience and you can take it for what it is worth...
I have bought some of the 80 and 100 dollar reels like this from abu and i normally have trouble with the clickers on them sticking after a year or so. Never had the issue with the 6000. everything else about the reel is better, but the clickers are one of my favorite parts.
if the swap gathering happens, I may have the model below this there. it is silver though and not the pretty blue that you like... _________________ Joe Simpson

I've got two of those reels, I bought them for Musky fishing up north, but have been using them for catfishing as well. Everybody I knew was trying to talk me out of the Abu's, but I went for them anyway and they haven't failed me yet (on either catfish or musky).
One note however, my brother and step-son both bought a similiarly (about $109) priced Shimano, the Cardiff, and were able to out-cast me by about 30 - 50% using the same weight lures. I think I'm gonna buy me a couple of these before next year's vacation. As a matter of fact, maybe we can work out a deal for you to buy my Abu's and I'll just make the switch now. (My Abu's are a little over a year old). PM me if you're interested. _________________ Jeremy

Naw I don't have any Joe. I recommended these to brent but he went with the 7000.
I prefer the 6000's and I have 16 of them, two 6600 rockets, 3 5000's, 2 5500's & 2 old 500's that I use for parts. I gonna be in the abu business for a long time. I been using abu's for over forty years! too set in my ways to change now!
Virtually all these models use purty much the same parts so I can cannibilize a couple. Plus I have a bunch of new parts that I keep around too. Except for the anti-reverse bushing or frame the abu reels are easy to fix & can be cheaply maintained. The anti-reverse bushin/gear or frame cost around $20 each so I usually just use those reels for parts. Fortunately those two parts don't fail very often.
Some of the newer model abu's have the 6 pin anti-backlash centrifical brakes and different clicker systems that I don't care for at all. So I gonna stick with the 6000's as long as they are available.
The 6500 is also a nice reel with more line capacity. The 7000's are the ultimate cat reel IMHO with a lot of line capacity and that huge power handle for leverage!

I'm planning on buying about four new rigs to add to the four I have now. I am going to buy at least two of the 6000's to see how I like them, but haven't decided on which ones for the other two. Dave's got me looking at the Blue Cat special now. I may just get a whole assortment going.

i like the 6000's myself and i think they are perfect for the price. i just wish you could still buy them locally, but at least you can get them online. The trophy with the power handle is nice, but i think they are over priced anyway. played with one new in the box at BPS and the darned clicker was broken. _________________ Joe Simpson

Hey Southpaw, I have the 6601, lefty and like it. Though it does not cast as far as Tex' reels do and the slide-clicker sticks from time to time. I want something with more drag for fishin' the trees! But it's perfect for drifting open water where you have room for the big'uns to swim around without hanging. _________________ Life is short- fish hard.

Its sad that I'm left handed, and really can't use left handed equipment. It's the price I paid for growing up in a right handed world. I used right handed reels, right handed baseball gloves, and other right handed stuff growing up because it's what the other kids had. Then when I got older and was able to buy left handed equipment, I couldn't retrain myself to use it.

Southpaw,
Are you left or right sighted?
When I was a kid I would shoot the bow left handed because it felt wright but when I got grown I found out that I was right sighted. It took for ever to get use to shooting the bow right handed. When I was five I was shooting rifle & shotgun right handed; but that was adult supervision. _________________ Capt. Larry
