community lakes- perch

Steve-o got me thinkin' about local community lakes.... which ones are good for some good numbers...some where to take some one to get them interested in fishing.

Anybody got any experience with any around Plano, Allen, McKinney?

shawn the little pond just north of legacy on alma has loads of little perch.
just on the left going north, by the appartments.

people throw bread for the ducks and the water just starts boiling

At the corner of Allen Heights and Bethany is Joe Farm Rec Center in Allen has a lot of panfish. Each year I take my cubscouts pack there to work on there fishing beltloop. You can catch plenty at the pavillions near the playground.

you can also keep going up alma to near bethany. there is a small paond in the park with a fountain. I have been told that has plenty too. I haven't tried it though.

Russell creek park also has fish. I have only caught bass there but I have seen many small fish chasing the lures up shallow. It is a bigger pond but it has a fishing deck and they can just drop lines over the side.

the pond by the appartments has the same and is much smaller ( so no searching for fish required). it has a concrete perimieter and there is no wlaking involved (for the kids).

Russell creek does have tons of small bluegill. I took my three boys and my oldest was even catching them on roadrunners.

I didn't get a chance to wet a line myself, you say there are bass in there as well?

Here is a pic of my youngest with one of the ones he reeled in.

yes there are. I was using a small white road runner also. I caught 2

another guy was catching them on a chart and white spinner. he caught 4.

nothing big though.

Pretty much any small pond will have blue gill. Those with fountains will have clearer water.

What I do is put in my poloroid sunglasses adn walk the bank with a few slices of white bread. make small doughballs and toss them ahead of you. If the doughball disappears, there is fish. Toss in some more and see how many fish you see.

This is a great way to attract feeding bluegill.

Some ponds have more than others, so walk around them and see which ones have more.

Worms and crickets work great too.

Loy lake is probably the best brim fishing I've seen. All along the dam. Great for tubing and no big boats. Can't bank fish it though. I think this is why the fishing is so good.

Boy Liverpool, you weren't kiddin' about that pond next to the apartments having a lot! They just boiled up everywhere. My problem was my hooks were too big. We gave up and just started feeding them bread and corn. I did manage to get one to bite... it was litterally about and inch. I think he was just biting on the side of the bait and not actually hooked on cuz he came right off.

I'll have to try Russell creek next.

best way i have found to caught brim is with a dry fly i use a criket fly or a little brown mayfly. they hit it so hard its not even funny. and you never have to rebait.

Some interesting reading about community lakes.
In fresh water, it is unlawful:
to take game fish and nongame fish from Community Fishing Lakes, sections of rivers lying totally within boundaries of a state park, the North Concho River from O.C. Fisher dam to the Bell Street dam, the South Concho River from Lone Wolf dam to Bell Street dam, and Lake Pflugerville with any other gear besides pole and line.
to take fish with a hand operated device held underwater except that a spear or speargun may be used to take NONGAME fish.
