|
|
My new crappie fishing boat is an old 1990 Champion.
Anybody know how to find the correct pitch prop for a 20'
bass boat with a 200 hp Evinrude?
I looked around on line to no avail.
Larry (Larry's Marine) looked at it and said the 27 pitch on it
should be more like a 22 or 24.
I don't really care much about top speed, just easy out of the hole
and efficient for the motor.
Thanks _________________ Everone has to believe in something... I believe I'll go fishing.

A 22 degree pitch should do you well for holeshot and nice top end speed. _________________ McKinney, Texas

I have a 16'9" bass boat about the same year and I have a 150 merc xr4 on it...I have a 21P on it and it is under proped...I need a 23/24p 4 bladed prop for it if I can find one I can afford.
My current prop on it is in horrible shape and I have lost 15-20mph top end. It still has a great hole shot and it still runs the motor at way to many rpm. The prop depth is about 5" below the pad (that last 6" of the hull it runs on at speed) and I run a whale tale on it for stability.
Things to consider is the depth of the prop below the pad...the deeper the prop the more load on the motor and less rpm and speed but you gain stability. If you run a jack plate and have the motor set back and up shallow you get a lot more speed and rpm's, but less stability as you are putting less boat in the water at speed (great for calm flat days when you wanna play though).
How fast do you want the boat to be? I am not happy with mine at 60mph which is about as fast as it goes right now (even with the prop with 1 curl on one blade from a rock) but being as small as it is I like the stability in rough water especially when I have to fight through jet fleas and wake boats..
James Propeller is a great place to go, they will let you test the prop to see if it is what you need. They also usually have a great assortment of used ones. I'm figuring with your 4' longer and 50 more hp boat you are probably going to need around a 24p prop...if you don't have a hydrolic steering unit on it I would recommend a 4 bladed prop as it gives easier steering at higher speeds (they say you lose low speed control, but the few I tested I didn't find that to be the case). When I run 3/4 to WOT (WOT, wide open throttle) with my 3 bladed (which I try not to do due to the 6400rpm and gas prices) and trimmed up, left turns are a fight...takes a lot of umff to get it to turn which can cause problems in rough water when you need one hand on the throttle. It is possible that you are not as crazy as I am and don't try to run as fast as you can all the time though.
My best suggestion is to find out what your motor's best WOT rpm is then try to find a prop that suits your needs. Things like motor position, weight, live wells full/empty, gas tank full/empty, cooler, passengers, gear and how fast you want to go are all things you should consider. I believe that if your motor is still strong that a 24p 4 bladed should be perfect. It should give you plenty of hole shot fully loaded and a good top end but you may need to watch the tach to make sure you don't over rev to much....Better to have a slightly lower pich than you need that one that will leave you in the hole!
Sorry about the long post...I've had a few beers....
