My dad always seemed to have the best ones. Two of my favorites:

When I was misbehaving.....
1. "Boy, I'll put something on you soap and water won't take off."
(This was sometimes substituted with, "Boy, I'll knock a knot on you a billy goat can't climb.")

And when I would tell him I wanted something....
2. Yeah son, people in he!! want ice water too."

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Of course, it is very important to be sober when you take an exam. Many worthwhile careers in the street- cleansing, fruit-picking and subway-guitar-playing industries have been founded on a lack of understanding of this simple fact.

In ancient times cats were worshipped as gods; they have not forgotten this.
